Sweaty Bullets is heavily inspired by a number of online comics. I read them religiously; you should too:

• Sluggy Freelance is the mother of all web comics.
• Freefall is a very family-friendly sci-fi strip.
• Goats is pretty messed up. Lecherous Nordic goats, Satanic chickens, and ambiguously gay extraterrestrials.
• When I Grow Up is quite good for the early-twenties crowd or recovering gen-X'ers.
• Clan of the Cats is a story-driven fantasy strip about witchcraft and such.
• Wendy features Manga-style bisexual women. There are rumors of a plot; I don't believe them.
• Help Desk is good for geeks. If you're not a geek, it will make you want to become one.
• General Protection Fault is another very good geek comic, but with good appeal to the unenlightened also.
• Cool Cat Studio is basically a beautifully-drawn soap opera, but the plot is getting more creative lately.
• Sinfest sets the standard for irreverant humor.
• Ashfield Online is, well... hmmm...
• Schlock Mercenary is a great sci-fi strip, with very fun characters and strong plot.
• Down to Earth has a sporadic production schedule, but is hilarious.
• Sheldon is good clean fun; a ten year old software billionaire.
• Elf Life is a truly amazing fantasy strip with an ongoing storyline stretching generations.
• Angst Technology is yet another good geek strip.
• Life on Forbes is sporadic but a good sci-fi strip.
